Deer Lake

Description

For such a delightfully serene natural environment, Deer Lake Park also hosts an immense amount of cultural activity. Here’s where you’ll find the Burnaby Village Museum and the vintage C.W. Parker Carousel along with the equally historic Hart House Restaurant. First-rate music and theatre is showcased at the outdoor Concert Bowl and on stage at the James Cowan Theatre and Studio Theatre.

The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, meanwhile, is a stunning piece of architecture renowned as Burnaby’s artistic hub. The centre serves up a year-round schedule of arts classes, performances, festivals, exhibitions and special events.

The park itself features a grid of walking trails and board walks, that circle the lake and strike off into meadows and woodlands. Stick your toes in the sand while lazing on the beach at the lake’s east end. Or trail fingers through the water while paddling across the small, oval-shaped lake. Launch your own canoe or sailboat, or take advantage of summer rental opportunities. Throughout your visit, keep ears and eyes alert for wild birds, bullfrogs and the splash of a rainbow trout or carp.

Capitalizing on a 10,000-seat natural amphitheatre, Deer Lake hosts such popular events as the Burnaby Rhododendron Festival, the Burnaby Discovery Day Festival, Symphony in the Park and the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival. Concert promoter The House of Blues also programs a summer-long series of music concerts here.
