Barnet Marine Park

Description

Barnet Marine Park is a favourite destination for water babies of all ages. Swim in the ocean. Explore the shoreline. Or bask in the sun. Picnic tables and barbeques are scattered under shady trees. And, during the warm days of summer, a concession stand, change rooms and outdoor showers are available.

Launch your canoe, kayak or sailing dinghy year-round. Or bring bait, net and/or a trap in hopes of harvesting big, meaty Red Rock or Dungeness crabs from a prime spot on the pier. Ocean-going freighters unload their cargo across the Burrard Inlet in North Vancouver. And it’s a pleasure to sit back and watch pleasure craft navigate the choppy waters. At high tide, the sea can rise 14 feet, erasing the hard-packed sand beach.

In mid-December merrymakers gather here to watch the flotilla of participants in the annual Carol Ships Parade of Lights. The cheery blaze of a huge bonfire keeps everyone warm on dry ground. And feel free to sing a few festive songs yourself if you drop by for what has become a popular Burnaby tradition.

History
Barnet Marine Park is located on what a century ago was the site of a bustling logging mill camp. Echoes of the past remain in the shape of a few concrete towers and the skeleton of a scrap burner. The latter juts out into the water and resembles a small castle.
